Introducing our exquisite Metal Bells, a perfect blend of musical charm and decorative elegance. These bells are not just instruments; they are a testament to the rich heritage of craftsmanship from Moradabad, India. Each bell is meticulously handmade using recycled scrap metals, showcasing the artistry and dedication of local artisans.
The medium-sized Metal Bell measures 4 inches high, 3.5 inches wide, and 1.5 inches deep. The rope length varies slightly, ranging from 8 to 9 inches, making it easy to hang in various settings. Whether you choose to use it as a musical instrument or a decorative piece, its unique design and sound will surely captivate anyone who encounters it.
These Metal Bells hail from the Western Indian regions of Kutch and Gujarat, where they were traditionally crafted for cattle herding. The different sizes and tones of the bells helped herders identify their animals, showcasing the practical origins of this beautiful craft. The artisans, descendants of the Lohar caste, have been creating these bells for generations, preserving a tradition that dates back over 1,000 years.
Today, the artisans utilize iron scraps salvaged from junkyards, hand-pressing them into various shapes and sizes. After shaping, the bells are coated with a mixture of powdered copper and mud paste, then baked in a furnace to achieve a rustic finish. This eco-friendly process generates minimal waste, consisting only of small traces of metal scrap and burnt mud, and requires very little energy since the bells are not welded.
Each Metal Bell is a product of a workshop sponsored by Noah’s Ark, an NGO dedicated to supporting artisan communities across India. Noah’s Ark provides funding for raw materials, machinery, and workshop repairs to over 100 artisan groups. In return, these workshops ensure that all employees receive fair wages and work in safe, clean environments.
Noah’s Ark also offers free capacity-building classes to its network of 600 artisans, ensuring high-quality craftsmanship and promoting sustainable practices. The organization has established 20 new workshops in the past 15 years, with all employees earning 10-15% above the local wage rate.
Founded by Mr. Samuel Masih in 1986, Noah’s Ark was created to combat the exploitative practices that plagued local artisans. By fostering a collaborative environment based on trust and mutual respect, Masih aimed to empower artisans and improve their livelihoods. His vision quickly gained traction, leading to significant orders from international partners, including Sullivan Florist in the United States, which placed an initial order worth $70,000.
Today, Noah’s Ark has established collaborations with various international organizations, producing approximately $1.5 million in exports. The profits from these sales support the Noah's Handicrafts and Welfare Society, which promotes artisan welfare, childhood education, and social work initiatives.
