Top 10 Online Shopping Sites in Canada Across Different Verticals

Welcome to our round-up of the top 10 online shopping sites in Canada!

Canada’s online shopping market is thriving, with eCommerce accounting for 11.5% of the country’s total retail sales in 2024.

Canada has around 29 million online shoppers (at the time of writing), and it’s worth noting that around 34% of the country’s ecommerce purchases come from overseas. By overseas, we’re mainly talking from the US and China.

So, that’s why we’re here because we're pretty sure we could learn a thing or two from these online retailers.

Let's dive in!

1. Amazon Canada

Amazon Canada officially launched in 2002, and the site has steadily expanded since then.

Today, it sells products in a range of categories, the most popular of which are clothing, furniture, and electronics.

To date, Amazon.ca has attracted 161 million monthly visitors, 85% of the country’s population.

2. Wayfair Canada

This US furniture and home decor company also has a Canadian arm that was launched in 2016.

The brand ranks highly in Canada's furniture and homeware market, accounting for around 5-10% of online sales in this category.

Examples of best-selling furniture and home decor products sold on Wayfair in Canada include wall art, beds, sofas, pillows, rugs, mugs, and teacups.

At the time of writing (July 2024), the site received 13.7 million visitors in the past month alone.

3. Canadian Tire

This retail company sells a wide range of products, including automotive and pet products, tools and hardware, outdoor living, kitchen and dining, beauty, health and wellness, and much more. It’s basically an online department store that, because of its popularity, also ranks among the top 10 online shopping sites in Canada for clothes.

Canadian Tire not only has a strong online presence but also has 1,700+ retail outlets across the country. In fact, the first physical store opened in 1922, and the online shop followed much later, in 2001.

4. Home Depot Canada (homedepot.ca)

This DIY-focused store has a Canadian branch, which received 29.86 million visits in May 2024 alone!

Home Depot Canada sells white goods such as appliances, outdoor patio furniture, DIY items such as building and roofing materials, and much more.

At the time of writing, Home Depot Canada was responsible for 20-25% of ecommerce sales in the DIY product category.

5. Gap Canada (gapcanada.com)

If you’re wondering which retail store ranks first among the top 10 online shopping sites for clothes in Canada, look no further than GAP. It attracted 11.3 million visitors in June 2024 alone!

Gap Canada doesn’t differ from other Gap sites in that it offers consumers clothing for men, women, and kids. Where the ecommerce fashion market in Canada is concerned, Gap Canada accounts for around 5% of ecommerce net sales.

6. Walmart Canada (walmart.ca)

There are more than 400 Walmart stores in Canada, which are visited by 1.5 million customers each day. The online version, Walmart.ca, is also visited by 1.5 million people daily.

The huge worldwide retailer launched in Canada in 1994, and its website went live in 2011.

Online customers can buy products in a range of categories, including clothing, groceries, shoes, jewelry, outdoor living, toys, home, electronics, furniture, toys, beauty and personal care, and much more.

7. Etsy Canada

Etsy Canada is no different from other offshoots of this popular ecommerce marketplace in that sellers offer customers handmade, vintage, and custom-made products, including jewelry, women’s clothing, art supplies, bath and beauty, bags and purses, and much more.

At the time of writing, there were 378,000 active sellers on Etsy.ca; for 35% of those, selling on Etsy was their sole occupation. Not only that, but 78% of Canadian Etsy sellers source their supplies and vendors domestically.

Also, in May 2024, the Canadian Etsy site received an impressive 16.99 million visitors.

8. eBay Canada

eBay is an eCommerce giant that we all know and love. It launched its Canadian platform in 2000. Canadian consumers can buy a wide range of products from businesses and individual sellers at a fixed price or from sellers who auction their products—however, 89% buy at a fixed price.

Recent statistics show that in May 2024, eBay.ca received 28.72 million visits, and interestingly, as of April 2024, eBay Canada ranked as the fourth biggest marketplace website in Canada!

9. Simons.ca

The majority of stores in our round-up are all big worldwide brands. However, we want to include Simons, aka La Maison Simons, because it ranks at number 5 in the top 10 online shopping sites in Canada for clothes

Simons first opened as a department store in old Quebec, Canada, in 1840. Expansion followed, and today, plenty of retail outlets are still operating in Canada.

The Simons.ca website launched in 2010, where online customers can buy clothing for men and women as well as home decor such as furniture, soft furnishings, carpets, and more.

The Simons.ca site received 4.5 million visitors in just June 2024 alone!

10. Best Buy Canada

If you're interested in consumer electronics, home appliances, and tech, Best Buy Canada is a popular choice. Consumers can shop for all the latest tech and accessories, such as cell phones, TVs, cameras and camcorders, smart home products, and more.

Best Buy Canada launched in 2002. To date, there are 190 outlets across the country, and 80% of Canadians live within 25km of one of its stores.

Best Buy Canada's website tells us that it is the “most visited multichannel retailer,” with 50 million yearly visitors to its physical stores and over 268 million visits to its website (on average).
